Happy Anniversary To Me!

Wyoming Solace by Alanna CocaSeptember 28th, 2008 I signed my first contract with Liquid Silver Books. It’s been one hell of a year. I’ve learned so much! I can certainly see my growth from book to book. Each one I write ends up being my favorite, so now I have to say that it’s my favorite “so far”.

Wyoming Solace. My baby. My firstborn. I started writing this story back in 1990. Yeah, I know. I did the math. :p I didn’t write faithfully, or even consistently. My editor at the time Deanna Pryce spent a lot of time with me, and broke me of a lot of bad habits. One of my early issues was the overuse of adverbs. My final editing project was to search for the ending ‑ly and hack them in half. Some sentences had two and three in there! So I like to describe things, okay!?

One year, and five books. I think that calls for some blackberry brandy.

Fine Print

Fine PrintI finished my latest manuscript, and even came up with a suitable title. You’d think that would be the hard part about writing right? Wrong. Now you send your pride and joy, the work you’ve spent the past two months on (sometimes more) then wait for someone to tell you that while your book is “cute” it isn’t “quite what we’re looking for.”

So I send it on. One house’s cute is another’s book of the week, right? That’s what I’m telling myself anyway. Following is a blurb for Fine Print. Hopefully I can announce some kind of publishing contract soon.

Three years ago, Kara Sorrento’s husband died in the line of duty. The fact that they never started a family is the one thing that she can’t lay to rest. Knowing that she could never love again, Kara decides to conceive a child in a more…non-traditional way. All she needs now is the ideal DNA, and she’s found it in Derek Martinez. Physically he’s a perfect specimen, with dark features so much like her late husband’s. Then Derek suggests changes to the insemination contract, and he threatens to disrupt not only her plan, but Kara’s entire highly structured and ultra-organized world. She would be required to let down her guard and join the living, no matter how vulnerable that would make her. She can do it, she’s a strong woman. It shouldn’t be that hard to resist Derek’s charms. She’d just have to think with her head, and not her heart. When ghosts from Kara’s past surface, Kara isn’t sure that she can trust her heart anyway.

Sounds cute, huh?

For a Price

Buy now! It’s here! For a Price, my first novel as Olivia Brynn! I just love new release days, it’s a good excuse to eat an entire box of Turtles and drink way too much brandy.

You can’t get blood from a stone. That’s what Maureen Sullivan’s mother always told her, but now it’s collection time, and bill collectors aren’t after blood; they want money. At this point, she’d do just about anything…for a price. To get her mother out of the red, Maureen packs her tiny nest egg and runs to Las Vegas, hoping for a miracle.

Once in Sin City, Maureen’s Aunt Lottie shows her that the fastest way out of a financial hell doesn’t lie in Maureen’s luck at a blackjack table, but in the auction of a much more controversial commodity: Maureen’s virginity. Vegas is the perfect place to cash in. What they decide to do will not only make headlines in the Nevada city, but around the world.

The last thing Maureen needs right now is to fall for sexy Nicholas Webster, who’s used to getting everything he wants. Because when the time comes, she’d have to betray the man she’s come to love in order to fulfill her contract. Will she be able to sell herself? And at what price?

Click on the cover to go to the Liquid Silver Books buy page where you can read the first chapter. I’ve got another excerpt right here and you can meet the main characters Nick and Reenie here.

Today is the last day to enter the contest to win a copy of For a Price. Just look at the post below this one (or click here) The winner will be posted tomorrow morning.

Got two minutes? Check out this short trailer:

Okay, music’s up, chocolate is only half gone, and the brandy is flowing. Join me in a happy dance celebration. We’ll let the WordPress janitors clean up afterwards.

Win Olivia’s First Book!

For a Price by Olivia BrynnOlivia posted a quick little contest. Ten trivia questions about Las Vegas, all are true except one. Leave a comment with your answer for a chance to win the first copy off the e‑presses of For a Price, coming  to computers around the world on 9/21/09. The winner will be posted on Olivia’s blog. Click the book cover to go straight to the contest.

Win For a Price!

Seven days from today, my first novel For a Price will be released to the world! I thought I’d share with you the article that started the whole thing. After reading THIS back in January, 2009, I sat in front of my computer and tried to wrap my mind around it. $3.8 million dollars for one night of sex with this virgin. Sure, she’s really pretty, and she might have a personality…but almost four million dollars? I just sat there and my little author-mind spun all of these scenarios as to what might spur her into making this decision, then I started writing.

Read excerpts from the book here and here, or meet the characters here. As soon as it’s available on Monday night, I’ll be posting the buy link, so check back with me!

Now for the fun. I’m posting a little quiz. Whoever gets the answer right wins the first copy off the proverbial e‑press of For a Price! (In case of a tie, those commenters will go into a random drawing.) Just comment on this post with your answer. I’m putting comments on moderation, so I won’t post any of them until the winner is chosen.

ONE of the following ten statements is false. Which one is it?

1) This guy: cowboyis named Cowboy Victor.

2) The Lottery is prohibited in Nevada

3) Only three casinos in the city allow photographs inside.

4) The Las Vegas Strip is not actually part of the city of Las Vegas.

5) The four hotels at the Las Vegas Blvd and Tropicana (MGM Grand, Tropicana, Excalibur, and New York-New York) have more hotel rooms than all San Francisco.

6) To drive from Los Angeles, California to Reno, Nevada the direction traveled is to the west.

7) Nevada has more mountain ranges than any other state

8 ) Sports betting is illegal in the US, except in Nevada. However, you cannot bet on the University of Nevada sporting events and on the Las Vegas professional baseball team (nor on presidential elections).

9) The MGM Grand employs over 9,000

10)Alanna once came out ahead in her trip to Vegas, because she found a quarter in the parking lot of a gas station. hint

Okay ladies and gents, these might look difficult, but I’m sure you’ll come through. If you need some hints, here are the websites I got the info from Here and Here.  Good luck! I’ll announce the winner right here on Tuesday morning, 9/22/09.

Coloring Inside The Lines

rules_imageI like to think of myself as a pretty good person. I follow most rules. (Except that dumb one about speeding.) Maybe this is why I’m struggling with my latest Work in Progress.  There are some rules, whether written or just understood, about romance novels. Must have the relationship as the main component to the plot (obviously). Must be written in the heroine’s point of view for the most part. (I like a 60% 40% relationship myself.) Must have a happily ever after(HEA). (Some publishers are happy with a HFN-Happy for now though) Main characters must be introduced within the first two chapters.

This is where I’m struggling with my work in progress. I just started chapter three, and am only now introducing my hero. Will readers put my book down at the end of chapter two, disgusted because they haven’t met Fabio? Should I care about the rules? Aren’t they tried and true, tested on millions of readers? Should one romance author from Little Town Wyoming really be the one to buck the system? What if I just go all out and make my hero into a pot-bellied homeless man who is ugly as sin?

I’ll just keep writing. If it gets rejected for publishing, then I guess we’ll know for sure. I’ll keep you updated.

My Lickable Laborer

Welcome! If you’ve just stumbled upon this post, you should go back to the beginning blog, my good friend and the other half of my brain Alanna Coca. If you’re following along like good little instruction followers, you just came from Paige Tyler’s blog. Are we set? Okay, on with the good stuff…

Lickable Laborer

Jack

The job site was hell. It had to be over a hundred degrees out today. When one careless crane operator ran into the cold water pipe, it started spraying all over the place.  Everyone scrambled to put things back together, but Jack couldn’t resist taking advantage while he could. He knew he’d have to get back to work soon.

Surely someone will wonder why he just left the crane where it was…

Sigh. That post took me much longer than it should have. Jack is pretty damn distracting. Don’t forget to leave a comment for your chance to win that huge grand prize!

Okay blog hoppers, on to the next blog: Trina M. Lee. I’ll follow along when I’m done with Jack here…

Evil Editing

Okay, that title makes it sound like I hate editing. Really with the right editor, it doesn’t have to hurt.

I’m done with round one (and a half) of edits for Retreat. I do a lot of piddly things that my poor editor Sharis Mayer has to correct. It seems I have an unnatural affection for the semicolon. Overall, it’s going well, and we should be finished soon, and then we start on Olivia’s Falling Star. Sharis is going to be sick of me before long 🙂

I started a new book, still untitled, and the only characters with names are the antagonist and the sexy hero. I use “filler” names until I can come up with something, so right now my heroine is Jane Doe. It’s pretty irritating when I read back through a chapter.

Don’t forget the Labor Day Blog Tour that starts right here on Monday September 7th 2009. Over a dozen lickable laborers will be on hand for your viewing pleasure! I’ll post some more information closer to the date. You can win this grand prize, which will keep you busy for quite a few government holidays.

Jealousy

So Alanna finishes her latest, I even helped her find the perfect title: Fine Print. I get all excited to get started on my next project, and what does she do? She starts another project for HER! I’m really starting to get annoyed, but what can I say? She’s already got enough voices in her head without mine in there bothering her. She knows I have a story I want to tell. I’ll just be the better person and wait impatiently. I mean patiently.

Falling Star is coming up for edits soon. Maybe then she’ll remember how much fun I am to work with.

Cover Day

I love the smell of new cover in the morning. Amanda Kelsey has done it again folks. I got the mock up for Retreat in my in box, and was immediately reminded of a classic romance novel. I’ll post it as soon as I get the official high resolution pic. I think you’ll like it!! I also finished (mostly) the trailer for Retreat, and as soon as I insert the cover I’ll post it here in the Book Trailer page.

I finished my sixth novel titled  Fine Print. I sent a sample in to an agent, and no one was more surprised than me when she replied asking to read the full manuscript! I’m a practical person though, and I won’t get my hopes up.  I also sent it in to Liquid Silver Books as a submission. Let’s hope one of them likes it enough to offer me a little sumthin sumthin.

UPDATE! After posting this, I got an email informing me that Preja Vu has a release date! 10/5/09, how exciting is THAT? Now I’d better get busy pimping it…

Mark Your Calendars

It might be a bit early to post this, but I’ll give a little reminder closer to the date…

On Labor Day, my fellow Liquid Silver Books authors and I will be hosting a blog tour. All you have to do is stop by Alanna’s blog on Labor Day 9/7/09. There will be links from there to guide you on your way. Eye candy galore, I tell ya. Comment at each blog stop, and you’re automatically entered to win THIS HUGE GIFT BASKET!! Grand Prize Gift Basket

Completing Retreat

Got the official email today. Time to start edits on Retreat. That calls for a Yee Haawww!!

Yesterday, I was creating the character profiles for Andi and Jake, and got to looking through that manuscript. I’m reading along, thinking…did I write this? I don’t remember that! Had it been that long? I even have a trailer for Retreat, I’m just waiting on some music.  In my defense, I’ve finished two books since then, and edited yet two others. Retreat seems to be my red-headed stepchild. No offense to the red heads out there. (Where did that phrase come from anyway?)

Now that it’s in the hands of a very capable cover artist (Amanda Kelsy, I’ve raved about her before, yes I know) and edits are underway, maybe I should dig that trailer out and finish it up. Stay tuned!

My new home

Moving InI did it. Spent an entire morning playing with WordPress.  If only someone had told me about WordPress before I got all comfortable with the other site! The ability to organize into pages is just tasty.

I finished my latest WIP last night, well…early this morning. More info on that later. Also completed Preja Vu edits (woo hoo) and got the cover art for Retreat assigned to my favorite artist Amanda Kelsey (She did Preja Vu for me, and Falling Star for Olivia.) Being so busy, it looks like I missed my regular Hump Day Hottie post. I’ll make it up to you next week, I promise. Any requests?

So click through the place, check out my rooms…offer interior design tips…please don’t spill wine on the carpet, it’s new.
