William should be call\u00ading any minute. She real\u00adly did\u00adn\u2019t want to be in a&nbsp;noisy bar when he final\u00adly&nbsp;did.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"dquo\">\u201c<\/span>We can\u2019t go home yet.\u201d Chris\u00adtine dragged Jen\u00adnifer and Alex across the crowd\u00aded dance floor toward the bar. \u201cWe have to at least wait until midnight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"dquo\">\u201c<\/span>If I&nbsp;miss William\u2019s phone call because you two kept me pris\u00adon\u00ader at a&nbsp;stu\u00adpid bar all night, I\u2019ll nev\u00ader for\u00adgive you.\u201d Jen\u00adnifer pout\u00aded, but her jut\u00adting low\u00ader lip was lost on Chris\u00adtine, so she turned to Alex for help. \u201cCan\u2019t you con\u00adtrol&nbsp;her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"dquo\">\u201c<\/span>Con\u00adtrol her?\u201d He grinned. \u201cI can bare\u00adly keep up. See why I&nbsp;love her?\u201d Alex\u2019s eyes went to Christine\u2019s ass as they wend\u00aded through the throngs of people.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"dquo\">\u201c<\/span>Which makes me a&nbsp;third wheel. Why don\u2019t you dis\u00adtract her, and I\u2019ll call a&nbsp;cab?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"dquo\">\u201c<\/span>William will call back if he can\u2019t reach you the first time. Quit being such a&nbsp;stick in the mud.\u201d Chris\u00adtine faced them in a&nbsp;rel\u00ada\u00adtive\u00adly clear spot near the bar. \u201cHe\u2019s prob\u00ada\u00adbly bring\u00ading in the new year with his bud\u00addies anyway.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The new year came hours ago in Afghanistan. He did\u00adn\u2019t get to cel\u00ade\u00adbrate.\u201d Jen\u00adnifer tried her pout&nbsp;again.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"dquo\">\u201c<\/span>I promise, once that ball drops in Times Square, you won\u2019t want to rush home to wait for a&nbsp;phone call.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"dquo\">\u201c<\/span>Don\u2019t bet on&nbsp;it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"dquo\">\u201c<\/span>I\u2019ll put my life sav\u00adings on it.\u201d Chris\u00adtine winked at Alex, whose lips twitched in a&nbsp;sup\u00adpressed smile.<\/p>\n<p>Jen\u00adnifer watched the cou\u00adple curi\u00adous\u00adly. Some\u00adthing was going on. \u201cNo deal. Your life sav\u00adings is pay\u00ading for my next&nbsp;drink.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chris\u00adtine laughed. \u201cYeah you\u2019re right. That\u2019s why I\u2019m dat\u00ading this Sug\u00adar Dad\u00addy.\u201d She walked into Alex\u2019s embrace, care\u00adful not to spill their champagne.<\/p>\n<p>Jen\u00adnifer could\u00adn\u2019t watch. As much as she loved Chris\u00adtine and her boyfriend Alex, see\u00ading them togeth\u00ader almost every day only made her long for the rela\u00adtion\u00adship with William that she\u2019d had to put on hold when he was called for duty. \u00c2&nbsp;He was sup\u00adposed to be home for Christ\u00admas, but as usu\u00adal, gov\u00adern\u00adment sna\u00adfus delayed his dis\u00adcharge. Now she hoped he\u2019d come home by Valen\u00adtine\u2019s Day. Jen\u00adnifer pulled her gaze away from her feet to find Chris\u00adtine and Alex still lost in each oth\u00ader. Maybe she could walk&nbsp;home\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Alex was the first to come up for breath. \u201cGet your\u00adself anoth\u00ader glass of bub\u00adbly. Only two min\u00adutes to midnight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grate\u00adful for the excuse to leave the lov\u00ading dis\u00adplay, Jen\u00adnifer found an emp\u00adty stool at the bar where a&nbsp;man was lean\u00ading. \u00c2&nbsp;As she wait\u00aded for the bar\u00adtender to make his way over, Jen\u00adnifer took a&nbsp;deep breath. <em>Damn<\/em>. The stranger beside her wore the same cologne \u00c2&nbsp;as William. Jen\u00adnifer bit her lip, and swore to breathe through her mouth until her drink arrived. Was it her imag\u00adi\u00adna\u00adtion, or did the entire bar get sud\u00adden\u00adly qui\u00adet? She snuck a&nbsp;glance at the man\u2019s hands then up his suit jack\u00adet until she reached his face. When she met his eyes, she blinked.
