It’s Saturday again! I’m late getting this up, thanks to WordPress for my daily collection of gray hair. I know you’re all on pins and needles, so on with the update!
Work in Progress News ~ I’m in the middle of merging two works into one. I also whittled down my “in progress” file down to eight. Five for me, three for Olivia. As I updated both sites’ Coming Soon pages, I noticed that all eight of the wips are full length. I enjoy writing novellas, so I need to come up with a plot for a shortie. Any ideas?
Industry News ~ Two bits of news this week. First, there’s news that the new Kindle OS will be compatible with HTML5, which is great news because that means the new Kindles will be able to read epub books with a lot fewer formatting issues. Also, how would you like a virtual bookstore that looks like this:
Pretty cool huh? Makes the virtual bookstore a more visual thing.
Search Term of the week aka How People Found My Websites ~ A couple surfers found my website by searching for “erotic riding” I suppose it’s a typo, but it could be a very interesting visual.
What I’m reading ~ Nothing new this week, but I did re-read a book by Cameron Dane, Something New. It’s a really good erotic menage with suspense elements.
A product of foster care, survivor Abby Gaines shields her heart and doesn’t believe in romance or love. Not even for Rodrigo Santiago and Braden Crenshaw, the two men — friends — starring in her erotic fantasies.
Tough-as-nails Rodrigo wants Abby with a passion. Just being near her makes him hard. To hide his desire, Rodrigo trades barbs and challenges everything Abby says. Rodrigo’s secret? Recently, someone else has begun arousing heterosexual Rodrigo’s libido too. Another man. Braden Crenshaw.
Bisexual, Braden has bounced between men and women in affairs that never last. He’s tired of hurting people but has never believed ménage relationships can work…until Abby and Rodrigo make him start aching for something new.
When Abby begins dreaming of her parents’ brutal double murder, the visions unearth new elements that make Abby question everything she thought she knew about the crime. Once Braden and Rodrigo discover the nightmares haunting Abby, they vow to help her find answers to mystery and love whether she wants their assistance or not.
Cameron is one of my favorite contemporary authors. There’s not a single book of hers that I read only once, and I’m loving her shift toward RS.
Hero Quote ~ From my first novel, Wyoming Solace–Cody Campbell:
“You can rest now, Elise. No one will hurt you here.” He spoke against her hair, not wanting to relinquish his position. “For once…just rest. Sleep well.”
Favorite Song of the Week ~ This video is what turned me on to Sick Puppies. Apparently I’m not the only one. When one of the band members made this video as a gift to the man in the video, it went viral. I can’t say that the video helped launch the band, but it sure didn’t hurt.
Beautiful, huh? And we don’t have enough female bass players out there. Hear that, girls? Power up those amps. Okay, that’s it for me. Back to merging wips.
Howdy! I know I’ve used this picture before, but I like it. So it’s Saturday again. Here’s what I’ve been up to for the past seven days:
Work in Progress News ~ I had a great start to the week, with wonderful plans to keep on chugging away on the WiP of the week, Michael. This one is about a horrific car accident, and I just killed someone. I guess I need to grieve before I can move on. Yeah, that’s it.
Industry News ~ Lots of industry peeps are in New York today for the New York Comic Con. I doubt it would have anything for me, being a (mostly) contemporary romance author, but that didn’t stop Carina Press from celebrating with a 40% off coupon this weekend only! Click here to visit the site, and just type in NYCOMICCON at checkout. What? That link goes right to the PreView book page? Well that’s handy. Also going full force in New Orleans is the first annual (hopefully) GayRomLit Retreat. I’m seeing lots of fun posts coming out of that.
Real Life News ~ The weather is actually pretty nice. Maybe we’ll get an autumn this year! Not much news for this section this week. I’m sure you don’t want to hear about my dentist appointment…
Search Term of the week aka How People Found My Websites ~ Other than the continuing query of “tom selleck naked” which I believe I exacerbated by writing those words here last week (and this week too I guess) this week’s query winner is: ”libros de romance”, which reminds me of more news! I’ve enticed two Spanish speakers to read my books and translate them into Spanish! I’m very excited about that prospect.
What I’m reading ~ I’m just going to list the book(s) that I read each week. I’m not reviewing them, but I won’t post them if I don’t like them. This week I read 18% Grey by Anne Tenino. “In a future where the United States has split along party lines, Agent Matt Tennimore’s job is to get people out of the Confederated Red States, whether they’re captured special ops agents from his own country or gay CRS citizens who’ve petitioned for asylum. He never expected to have to retrieve his high school crush, aka the guy who ostracized him for being gay.” A really good read that I couldn’t finish all in one night, which meant that I ended up dreaming my own ending to the book. I admit Ms. Tenino did a better job than my subconscious.
Hero Quote ~ From Josh Bradley, the hero from Olivia’s Tessa’s Pride:
“You taste amazing. Even when you’re pissing me off.”
Favorite Song of the Week ~ Okay, Howard Jones showed up on my Twitter feed last week (I LOVE HIM!) I’d lost track of him over the past few years, relying on his old stuff to keep me from cracking up (HoJo fans get it) Come to find he put a new album out a couple years ago, found this song and just about melted.
Sigh. I had a teengirl crush on him back in the day, and he still sends warm fuzzies to my insides.
Happy Saturday! I hope yours started better than mine, I woke up to the first snowfall of the season. Ugh. Just think, last week I was sitting on my porch in shorts. At least it waited until October this year, I really shouldn’t complain, but I’m going to anyway. I’m not leaving the house.
Work in Progress News ~ Well, I finished reworking my backlist, they’re all back up for Kindle, Nook, and coming soon to iTunes etc. While I wait for the first round of edits for Olivia’s Last Call, I realized that I could actually *write* something new. It took a few hours to get used to the idea, and after looking through all twelve of my works in progress, I started picking at one. The next day I decided to take that original idea and tweak it a little bit, so guess what I did? Yep. Started number 13. Well, more like 12.5, because I might be able to merge the original and this new one. We’ll see. Such are the joys of pantsing.
Industry News ~Autography is out! Looks like a great app for authors to take their iPads to book signings. This has been in development since May, and it’s finally available to the public.Kind of. So far it’s just for the iPad, and it looks like you’ll have to buy the book through the Autography store (which I’m unable to find a link for) and there’s no word on cost or availability. Okay, let’s call this a Pseudo-launch, and I’ll be pseudo-excited since I won’t be able to use it quite yet, but let’s hope there are some developers out there who want to share the love with the rest of us. I’m all signed up for Kindlegraph, and maybe I can figure out a way to use my tablet and stylus to sign a book…hmm….
Real Life News ~ Well, the Yankees didn’t win the ALDS, so you won’t have to hear me go on about baseball until next year. Also, like I said earlier, it’s snowing, so get ready for some big whiny posts where I wonder why I live on top of this mountain. I did get a chance to read a couple of great books this week. Intimate Whispers by Dee Carney just came out, and I really liked it. I also have Sandra Brown’s Lethal on my desk taunting me. I haven’t read a hardcover book in so long, I have a feeling I’ll try pushing invisible buttons to turn the page.
Search Term of the week aka How People Found My Websites ~ This week’s is a classic. “someone getting distracted” found Olivia’s site. I must have mentioned my lack of focus over there once or twice.
Hero Quote ~ From Olivia’s recently contracted book Flipped, a quote from Mario Gutierrez:
“You’re my best friend. You can tell me to leave. Just say the word and I’ll go downstairs and we’ll forget I ever opened that door. We can blame the liquor. Or God please tell me it’s okay. Tell me you want this too, and let me kiss you.”
Favorite Song of the Week ~ OK Go has some awesome videos. This isn’t their latest, but I think it’s their greatest. Enjoy This Too Shall Pass, the Rube Goldberg Version.
They had to do that all in one take. I’m sure it took more than one try, but that’s simply amazing. I love OK Go.
Okay, that’s it for me. Back to my snowy work in progress. I guess I’ll thank Mother Nature for providing the atmosphere.
It’s October, and you won’t believe this but I’m sitting outside right now, typing up this post. Seriously. Al Gore must be onto something, we usually have our first snow of the season by now. *knock on wood*
I’m posting a picture that I took a couple days ago as I took a drive up through the Curt Gowdy State Park. It’s really a beautiful area.
Work in Progress News ~ I have none, but Olivia just received a contract on her first m/m short story, Flipped! It’s so exciting. She’s going to post an excerpt soon.
Industry News ~Kindle, Kindle, Kindle! Wow, great news coming out of Amazon this week. New Kindle versions, including a tablet and touch-screen Kindle, and a great low price on the basic model: $79. I didn’t think I’d be able to get a Kindle for under $100 until at least 2013, so this is great news. Someone remind me that I don’t need another reading device…
Real Life News ~ It’s post-season baseball time! Although this isn’t really my real-life news, you’ll have to put up with my baseball talk for the next few weeks. Any idea who will take it all? Those Phillies are pretty hot this year. Play wise, y’all.
Search Term of the week aka How People Found My Websites ~ Someone found Olivia’s site by searching for “Erotic Bunny” I never know what to think.
Hero Quote ~ From my book Fine Print, a quote from the hero Derek:
“You just asked me seventy-two questions about my personal and medical history. All I want to know is if you are going to be a capable parent before I donate any of my seed. That’s a legitimate request, don’t you think?”
Favorite Song of the Week ~ Fly, by Nicki Minaj featuring Rihanna
I am not fly, I am levitation. (Not sure what that means, but I like it)
That’s it for me this week. See you again next Saturday!
Howdy! It’s autumn in Wyoming, so the leaves are changing color, and the air is getting brisk. Here’s what I’ve accomplished this week:
Work in Progress News ~ I haven’t written anything new in what feels like months! I just finished tweaking Retreat. I’m hoping to get it up on the sales sites almost immediately after the old version is pulled, but I’m not exactly sure how I’ll do with that timing. There might be a lapse. Olivia got the official blurb for Last Call from Samhain Publishing (their blurb guru is amazing)
Industry News ~ I love this week’s headline. HarperCollins Publishers Making 5000 Titles Available Print on Demand. That’s great news! They’re the first of the “big six” to embrace POD publishing. This will mean fewer “out of print” titles, larger availability, and a much happier environment.
New York, NY, – In a first from a major trade publisher, HarperCollins Publishers today announced “Comprehensive Backlist.” This program will allow all physical bookstores, from the largest to the smallest, to promote and sell the HarperCollins backlist through in-store “Digital-to-Print at Retail” (DPR) using the Espresso Book Machine (EBM). The program will enable bookstores to offer thousands of trade paperback books from the HarperCollins catalog through a mix of traditionally printed books and DPR, as space and cash flow restrictions will no longer be a factor. DPR editions will be sold on an agency model. It is expected that the independent bookstores that already have the Espresso Book Machine in place will join the program.
If you don’t know what the EBM is, click that link for a YouTube video. It’s the future of publishing, y’all. Real Life News ~ I got nothin. I’m pretty much a boring person lately. I actually worked a whole bunch at my part time job this past week. I’ll blame my boring-ness on that. Search Term of the week aka How People Found My Websites ~ This week I got a whole lot of folks searching for cinemagraphs. Now there are plenty of those out there, but they ended up on my Cinecover page, where I’ve put all my new animated book covers. Aren’t they gorgeous? I mean really, why not have some fun with e-book covers? Thanks to Michael at Booknibbles.com for my new eye candy.
Hero Quote ~ From my untilted work in progress: “I don’t even know who I am.” Noah spoke through his teeth. “Do you know what that’s like? To not even recognize yourself?”
Favorite Song of the Week ~ A new one by Matt Nathanson. This one makes me smile.
That’s it for me. I hope you all have a great week!
Whew! What a week. Well two since my last update. Here’s what I’ve been up to:
Work in Progress News ~ This past week I’ve been working on Retreat. Going back through that book to kill the ellipses and tweak it for republishing. This book is the one that I always forget that I wrote. Poor little Retreat. It will be republished at a new low price on October 1. New Release News ~ I guest blogged a few places this past week. I went to Travis Erwin‘s place and interviewed Ryann, then shared my PreView Playlist over on James Stafford’s Why It Matters blog. I also got a great review for PreView. According to Romance Books Forum, Preview is “an amazing, hot, exciting, romantic tension filled, book with just enough conflict, mystery, and suspense to keep me enthralled”. So thanks RBF!
Industry News ~ There’s a new rumor that Amazon is talking with book publishers about launching a subscription service for digital books, in which customers would pay an annual fee to access a library of content. (Think Netflix or Rhapsody for ebooks) Not sure how that will work itself out. Especially with the NY6 attitudes about new and unusual things. I’ll keep my eyes open for more news though, I think it would be awesome. Real Life News ~ Took a mini vacation last week, and drove across the state to get to Yellowstone National Park and Grand Teton National Park. If you’ve never been, you really do need to make the trip. Judging by the license plates, we were the only vehicle from Wyoming in the 100 mile radius. I heard a whole lot of European accents and busloads of Japanese tourists. I took the picture above on our way home. I loved those mountains… Search Term of the week aka How People Found My Websites ~ This week I got “shhh im sleeping”. Don’t ask me where Google sent them, that’s just weird. Hero Quote ~ From Retreat, my contemporary western.
“Not a day went by that I didn’t think about you, but the nights were the worst.”
Favorite Song of the Week ~ Favorite Song of the Week ~ New stuff from David Guetta and Usher. So new it doesn’t have a real video, but stare at David’s album cover for the next 4 minutes:
Thanks for stopping by! Have a great weekend and upcoming week.
Ugh. September. That means snow is around the corner.
And that’s all I have to say about that.
Here’s what’s going on around here:
Work in Progress News ~ I’ve been spending the week going through Olivia’s book Falling Star. I’ll be republishing this one at a lower price, so I had to go through and make sure there weren’t too many ellipses (uh…yikes. I kinda went overboard with those things. Again.)
New Release News ~ Oh boy. You guys are gonna love this. Carina Press has a great promotion going for Romantic Suspense books, including PreView which comes out on Monday! I’m teaming up with six other Carina Press RS authors for a scavenger hunt of sorts. Click the banner and you’ll get more information. (Post goes live Monday, but you never know what you’ll find when you click that banner…)Also, I’ll be guest blogging at a few different places around the webosphere, I’ll be sure to post links once they’re live.
Industry News ~ This is just a small segment of the industry, but it’s big news for me and a ton of other authors and readers. Ellora’s Cave Publishing has dropped its prices on all EC books at the major distribution sites like Amazon.com and Barnes and Noble. EC has long been criticized for their inflated distro prices. For example Olivia’s only EC book At Ease, originally sold for $4.45 at the EC site, but $8.45 at Amazon. Now only $4.48! At Ease is a very short (17K) novella, so almost $8.50 was way too pricey in my opinion. So woohoo for EC! Welcome to the age of the Kindle and Nook! (Like how I put my subliminal pimp in there?)
Real Life News ~ Kids are back in school, life has quieted down. This coming weekend I’m taking them on a trip to Yellowstone, so maybe I’ll post some pictures after that. Otherwise, my “real life” has just centered around guest blog posts for next week and getting Falling Star ready for repubbing. I guess that’s pretty boring. Sorry.
Search Term of the week aka How People Found My Websites ~ Someone found AlannaCoca.com by searching for the word “hairy”. Wow. I hope my site was on page 768 for that search, but okay. Over at Olivia’s Place, I had this one: “because i’m worth it”. And I hope my site was on page one. In bold.
Hero Quote ~ Can’t help it. I’ve got to post something from PreView, since it’s the birthday book.
“I know a lot about you. I know now you’ve got me right where you want me. Close enough to prove how much I want you too. I also know you started this little fight just so I’d put my hands on you.”
Favorite Song of the Week ~ My daughter started singing this the other day, and it’s been stuck in my head since. Now watching the hokey video, I think I’m done with it. What a riot!
Okay, there’s your blast from the past for the week.
Also, I’m part of the JustRomance.Me blog hop this weekend. Join us HERE, we’re giving away plenty of books, and we’ll be chatting on Monday, so you’ll have a chance to chat with a handful of authors, and ask us whatever you’d like to know. See you there!
Last week of August. All summer I’ve been enjoying the weather, and the end of August tells me that the snow will start to fly sooner than I would like.
I don’t want to talk about it.
The picture here is from a recent trip to the mountains near the Wyoming/Colorado state line. Each tree has an interesting personality, yeah?
Work in Progress News ~ After finalizing FLIPPED for Olivia, and sending it off to two publishers, I took some time to go through FINE PRINT to get it ready for self publishing. What I learned was that in 2009 I *loved* ellipses. I probably took fifteen or twenty instances out of that manuscript. I’m working on Falling Star now. Same thing. I don’t know what it is about those three little dots…
New Release News ~ So excited for PREVIEW to get a second shot. I really like this story. Twists and turns and love. I made a trailer for it last night. I posted it along with an excerpt on the PREVIEW book page, or you can see it below. Let me know what you think!
Industry News ~ I found it interesting that Simon and Shuster acquired the print-only rights for John Locke’s successfully self-pubbed books. With the swing being toward E, the fact that S&S has seen Locke’s potential, and is willing to forego ebook rights to make him happy, is pretty amazing in my opinion. Good on ya, S&S! If you can’t beat em….join em!
Real Life News ~ Kids are back in school, which changes the dynamics of my entire little town. Population increases by about 20K (all 18-20 yrs old) who don’t know where they’re going. Needless to say I stay off the roads as long as I can.
Search Term of the week aka How People Found My Websites ~ I’ve got two this week. Someone got to my site by searching for “dirty footprints on the floor”. Not sure how I feel about that, but I’m buying a mop tomorrow. Over at Olivia’s place, someone searched for “A tease”. Now that’s funny. They found my book AT EASE, which I never realized what a squished up url would look like. Awesome.
Hero Quote ~ From a book I’m reworking for self publishing, FALLING STAR by Olivia Brynn.
“Because with her I am just Adam Herlihey. I don’t have to be anyone else. I want to get to know her, and I want her to get to know the real me. Not what Opinion Magazine tells her; not what the tabloids write about me. Understand?”
Favorite Song of the Week ~ So many songs, so little webspace. Today I’d like to share one that plays a big role in my upcoming release PREVIEW, I give you Keith Urban:
Interestingly enough, though I’m not a huge fangirl of Keith Urban, he did inspire the aforementioned book FALLING STAR, about a cosmopolitan-country music star troubled by liquor but tamed by one good woman. Though the hero in my book doesn’t have a sexy Aussie accent, I think that would have been too obvious, yeah?
Okay, that’s it for me this week. See you next time!
I know you all wonder what I do all week. Especially if you follow me on Twitter, you must think I don’t do much. Okay, you’re mostly right. Still, to make myself feel better, here is my to-done list for last week.
Work in Progress News ~
Well I finished FLIPPED. Sent it off to two publishers. One I really really want, and the other is a close second. Could be a month or more before I get an answer. The joys of submissions. *sigh* But it’s done now and I really enjoyed writing it. Now that I’ve stuck my toe in that pool, I feel a bit more comfortable with the genre.
New Release News ~ PREVIEW will be released in just over two weeks! So exciting. If you haven’t seen it yet, I did add a coming soon to my home page, you can check out the cover which, until recently, I’ve been keeping under wraps. Carina Press has some fun stuff planned for its release, I’ll share more soon.
Industry News ~ This might not be so much publishing news, but HP has discontinued the Touchpad, and all webOS devices. It’s a sad sad day for me, I really love my webOS phone, and had the Touchpad on my wishlist since before it came out. Unfortunately they were too pricey for me, and now that they’re cheap, they’re all sold out. This is my luck.
Real Life News ~ Took a short trip to the resort town of Dillon CO yesterday. It’s a gorgeous little town, too bad it rained the entire time. I did get some nice pics tho. The one above I took with my beloved Palm Pre Plus (SEE? See how awesome my phone is? Click it for the large view.)
Search Term of the week aka How People Found My Websites ~ This week: kara soriento. This has happened a couple of times, for both websites. People searching for character names. I assume it’s people with these names wondering what’s out there about them. I don’t know about you, but if I found a book where the hero/heroine had my name, I’d love that.
Hero Quote ~ From Olivia’s recently completed book FLIPPED:
I’ll be honest with you. I’m scared. But if I don’t do this, I’ll be scared for the rest of my life. This is just for me. For my mental health. To prove that I can do it.
Favorite Song of the Week ~ Okay, not the most epic of Pink Floyd’s songs, and not their most famous, but the video has stuck with me for many years after it came out decades ago. Back when they showed videos on MTV.
Also, I’d like to thank David Gilmour (or his wife more likely) for cutting his hair.
That’s it for me this week. One more week until summer officially ends. Live it up!
